

Mean of a frequency table
We already know how to find the Mean of discrete data (refer to Mean, Median and Mode)
Find the Mean of a frequency table with this formula:

It usually involves two additional steps:
- Example 1. This table shows stars awarded to students in a sports club. Find the mean of
Stars x | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
Frequency f | 2 | 8 | 4 | 3 | 3 |
(a) Work out fx for each value of x. That is multiply f by x

(b) Work out the sum (add up) the columns f and then fx

(c) Work out the Mean
