Median of a Stem-and-leaf Diagram
We already know how to find the Median of discrete data (refer to Mean, Median and Mode)
- Example 1. Below is a stem-and-leaf diagram, with key
3 | 0 1 6 |
4 | 7 7 9 9 |
5 | 5 6 7 8 |
6 | 0 3 3 8 |
7 | 8 9 |
8 | 0 |
Key: 3 | 0 represents 30 |
Find the median |
As there are 18 values, the median (midpoint) is between the 9th and 10th value in the stem-and-leaf diagram. The 9th value is 56 and the 10th value is 57. The midpoint between 56 and 57 is 56.5 So the median is 56.5 |
