Rule 1 − Adding and Subtracting Fractions: when the denominators are the same
Adding − just add the numerator and maybe write the fraction in its simplest form
- Example 1.1. 1/5 + 2/5 = 3/5
- Example 1.2. 1/10 + 2/10 = 3/10
- Example 1.3. 1/7 + 2/7 = 3/7
- Example 1.4. 1/3 + 2/3 = 3/3 = 1
Subtracting − just subtract the numerator and maybe write the fraction in its simplest form
- Example 1.5. 4/5 − 2/5 = 2/5
- Example 1.6. 5/10 − 2/10 = 3/10
- Example 1.7. 6/7 − 2/7 = 4/7
- Example 1.8. 1/3 − 2/3 = −1/3
