This means expand the brackets and then simplify by putting like terms together
- Example 1. Expand and simplify 7(a + 3) − 2(2a − 4)
- Example 2. Expand and simplify 2(a + 3) + 8(b + 2) − 5(2a − 3b)
- Example 3. Expand and simplify 3x(2y + 7) − y(5x + 2)
(a) Expand by multiplying out the brackets
7(a + 3) − 2(2a − 4)
| = 7a + 21 − 4a + 8 |
(b) Simplify by putting like terms together
7a + 21 − 4a + 8
| = 7a − 4a + 21 + 8 | |
| = 3a + 29 |
(a) Expand by multiplying out the brackets
2(a + 3) + 8(b + 2) − 5(2a − 3b)
| = | 2a + 6 + 8b + 16 − 10a + 15b |
(b) Simplify by putting like terms together
2a + 6 + 8b + 16 − 10a + 15b
| = | 2a − 10a + 8b + 15b + 6 + 16 | |
| = | − 8a + 23b + 22 |
(a) Expand by multiplying out the brackets
3x(2y + 7) − y(5x + 2)
| = 6xy + 21x − 5xy − 2y |
(b) Simplify by putting like terms together
6xy + 21x − 5xy − 2y
| = 6xy − 5xy + 21x − 2y | |
| = xy + 21x − 2y |
